What's my motivation?

How I feel about social media.
“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” –Albert Einstein

While I have embraced social media in my professional life – using a blog, Twitter, YouTube and more to engage with the public – I’ve been wary of using it on a personal level for privacy, time-management and overall sanity reasons (don’t we have enough going on without thousands of social media tools adding to the clutter?).

Sure, I love to follow friends old and new on Facebook because their status updates make me laugh or they share articles that inspire and educate me. But blogging? I’ve never blogged for personal reasons, primarily because I’m not sure anyone would care what I had to say. Why put myself out there if I don’t believe I have something of value to offer?

So why am I here? If the title of the blog doesn’t give it away, this is a part of a class assignment. Over the next few months, I’ll write about communications and social media topics, sharing what I’ve learned in my career and through grad school thus far.

I’ll strive to provide valuable, engaging content, with visuals to help illustrate my point of view. Will it be perfect? Probably not. But perhaps opening myself up to this experience will teach me – and dare I suggest my readers – a few new things.

Let’s see how this journey goes …
